SATURDAY
• Tubing Down the Green River, A relaxing afternoon dipping your toes in the water as we float along the Green River Gorge with some Class 1 & 2 rapids. Cost: $10.00 Bring: exact change, swimsuit, a towel, water shoes, dry clothes & money for dinner. Host: Jeff Slye & tba • N.C. Apple & Street Festival, downtown Hendersonville. Cost: Free. Bring: camera, walking shoes, money for incidentals & dinner downtown. NC Apple Festival: Labor Day Weekend, Hendersonville Host: tba • Glassy Mountain Hike at the Carl Sandburg Home. The trail climbs from the far end of the Memminger Trail to the summit of Big Glassy Mountain, with its open rock face and great views to the northwest. The trail is rated easy and is approximately a 3.4-mile loop. In the Wilderness Episcopal Church, down the road is St. John in the Wilderness Episcopal Church, listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. Cost: Free to hike. Bring: a quarter $0.25, a backpack, water/snack, hiking shoes & money for dinner. Host: Bejae Keil & Renee Mermance • Lake Lure Boat Tour (SOLD OUT), Flowering Bridge & The Lake Lure Inn (Limited to 18 persons, first come, first serve sign-ups): Discover the beauty and charm of Lake Lure on a covered boat tour. Listen to the legends of the lake and learn about the natural and cultural history of Hickory Nut Gorge & attractions from the movie “Dirty Dancing.” The handicap-accessible Flowering Bridge, designated as a “living 3D mural” National Wildlife Habitat and a Monarch Butterfly Waystation & the famous Lake Lure Inn, is within walking distance. Cost: $18.00, $16.00 Seniors (62+). Bring: a camera, walking shoes, money for incidentals & dinner. A visit to Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park is more than just a walk in the woods or an awe-inspiring view. Adult 1-Day Admission Ticket (chimneyrockpark.com) Hosts: Kim Kiser & Greg Strothers • NC Arboretum Gardens: The North Carolina Arboretum (ncarboretum.org) The handicap-accessible outdoor sculpture exhibition features works by 17 local and national artists drawing inspiration from the natural environment. Situated throughout the Arboretum’s spacious, open-air gardens, the show offers guests a doorway into the wild world from the comfort and safety of cultivated landscapes transformed by art. Cost: Free; no admission cost to view the sculptures, exhibits & gardens beyond the usual parking fee of $16 per personal vehicle. Outdoor Pool: The pool is a central hub of activity during the summer. Guests of all ages enjoy the opportunity to swim and relax. Pool Saturday 1:00-5:00pm and Sunday, 2:00-5:00pm.
Hammocking: You are welcome to bring your hammock and hang it up at various locations through the campus. Bonclarken Lake: Enjoy walking around it but due to limited staff this season, it is not open to use. Athletic Fields/Courts: Available year-round on a first-come, first-served basis: The athletic fields provide ample space for all kinds of outdoor activities and field games including volleyball, soccer, and tennis. Disc Golf Course: Bonclarken’s 18-hole disc golf course travels through wooded areas, open fields, and across streams. As a great, low impact activity, the course is very popular with all ages. Birding: Bonclarken offers a variety of habitats including creeks, meadows, marshland, and wooded areas to observe birds and other wildlife. Souvenirs and Bonclarken apparel items are available, as well as unique handmade items and gifts donated to Bonclarken by Women Ministries groups from Associate Reformed Presbyterian churches.
